CNN Asia Bureau Chief
Your Talk Asia program hosted by Dan Rivers on January 20, 2007 interviewing Thaksin Shinawatra reflected a sub-standard of a CNN broadcast. In a normal journalistic practice, viewers are presented with two-sided information, especially with political viewpoints. It is also understood that political committees may buy airtime to promote or campaign for their candidates. However, we are not certain if the above mentioned interview was based upon an informative aspect of broadcasting or upon the commercial aspect of CNN Asia, namely, paid airtime to promote Thaksin Shinawatra.
How pitiful it appears for a CNN Asia reporter, Dan Rivers, to pose canned statements prompting Thaksin Shinawatra to gibber without follow-up questions!! Obviously questions or rather statements of Mr. Rivers seemed to be coached instead of analyzed based upon knowledge of the situation and culture of Thailand. It is unfortunate to view this CNN reporter as accessory to Thaksin Shinawatra to promote more lies. CNN furthermore becomes the obvious accomplice of Mr. Shinawatra of a multitude of wrongdoings and lies to our beloved country.
Had Thaksin Shinawatra truly observed the rules of the law as he proclaimed, he would not be talking to Mr. Rivers or any other media to deodorize his image today. Mr. Rivers did not do his homework
he could have cited a few segments of the law that Thaksin Shinawatra bent to accommodate his needs. Hopefully, CNN Asia will not falter into the Golden Rule
that is, he who has the gold makes the rule...
During 2005-2006 millions of Thai people protested against Thaksin Shinawatra. People Alliance for Democracy (PAD) led by 5 gentlemen became the contributing factor to expel Thaksin Shinawatra. Asia Satellite Television (ASTV) was and still is the only source attempting to broadcast the real news. ASTV becomes the major and powerful source of information for Thai people at home and abroad. Not a single word was acknowledged by CNN Asia. Shouldnt people like you in the media world be proud of ASTV and its staff who withstand this turmoil with dignity of newspeople?
It was a David and Goliath situation.
We are asking CNN Asia on behalf of PAD-USA (People Alliance for Democracy) an equal time of Talk Asia to broadcast a response to Thaksin Shinawatra interviewed by Dan Rivers. We believe Mr. Sondhi Limthongkul of ASTV is the most qualified person to address this issue. Furthermore, if CNN Asia is interested in staging a forum, both Mr. Shinawatra and Mr. Limthongkul should be invited to debate and clarify issues. What CNN Asia and Dan Rivers did on Talk Asia was staging a mea culpa for Thaksin Shinawatra. Thaksin claimed that he put in six years of serving his country; it should have been said that six years of robbing, corrupting, and abusing his country.
Looking forward to hearing from you, we remain
Tat and Jarunee Chantraparnik
