It is hard for me to believe that we are already a little over half way through the 2004 ATP Tour season. This year I have been presented with new challenges that have forced me to work hard on my game, both mentally and physically. It has been a learning experience, full of difficult periods, but it has taught me so much that success during the summer hard court season seems imminent. One reason I have been looking forward to the North American summer season is because of the TD Waterhouse Cup.
The site of two of my five ATP titles, Long Island is one of my favorite locations on tour. I always feel extremely comfortable in the confines of the Hamlet Golf & Country Club. This year I will attempt to make history by winning the TD Waterhouse Cup for the third consecutive time. The only other person to do so was one of the greatest men's tennis players in history, Hall of Famer Ivan Lendl (1984-86). It would be quite an honor to have my name next to his in the records of this tournament.
One of the main obstacles that stands in my way for a third consecutive title is future Hall of Famer Andre Agassi. The eight-time Grand Slam champion ousted me in the Round of 16 at the Australian Open this year and will provide a tough test during his first return trip to the TD Waterhouse Cup since 1988 when he won the title. I will have to play some of my best tennis in order to beat him, but I also know that I will have the help of my fans.
One of the main reasons I play so well on Long Island is due to the huge outpouring of support that I receive from the Thai people. Last year hundreds of fans showed up for each of my matches wearing red to display their support, and it definitely helped give me the "home court" advantage. I will need that again this year, so I hope that we have a great turnout.
Without the incredible support of my home country and my fans, I would not have been able to make it this far in my career. I am still amazed that people recognize me on the streets and ask me for my autograph. It is such an honor to be able to represent my country on the tennis court and win for all of the people that have helped me throughout the years.
I am not sure what the future holds, but I do know that I am looking forward to attempting to make history at the TD Waterhouse Cup in August in New York. It should be a great tournament!
The TD Waterhouse Cup is Long Island's premier sporting event and is now part of the prestigious US Open Series, a six-week summer season consisting of 10 hard-court ATP and WTA tournaments being played in North America.
